Functional Fitness – Good for all ages and stages of life.

blog3

Functional fitness is one of those buzzwords that has been thrown around a lot lately. But what exactly does it mean? For the matter of brevity, functional fitness is anything that can help you in your daily life. For example, a deadlift is functional in that on a daily basis we’re picking objects off of the floor and learning how to do so correctly will not only make this easier but safer as well. Another example is an overhead press. Have to put a heavy box on the top shelf of your closet? You’re doing a press.

When most people think of functional fitness or CrossFit they think of adjectives like “extreme” and “intense”. While there may be short bursts of intensity most classes are centered around learning, community and building strength through correct movement patterns. Additionally most discount themselves or their family out being that they’re under the impression that CrossFit is only for 20 somethings with 6 packs. This could not be further from the truth. At Triumph we offer classes for every age and ability. Our daily classes are open to ages 12 and up with our Triumph Teens class for those 13-19 and Triumph Troops for 4-11.

Specifically, the Triumph Troops class is a fantastic way to start children on the path to body awareness, learning new skills and making friends. The classes are a bit different than Teens and regular CrossFit classes. While fitness and healthy living are important we center the classes around fun and engagement. As adults, we complain about long days in the office or in the field and seem to forget that our kids also have long days at school and in other activities. So, coming to Troops class should be a stress reliever for them just as the adult classes are for us.

In a regular Triumph Troops class we work on simple CrossFit while including terms such as WOD, Tabata, AMRAP, etc…so the athletes can have a familiarity with what they would hear during a regular CrossFit workout. The workouts are based around both teams and individual efforts. Additionally keeping things fun by playing games, talk about their day and introduce new skills regularly to keep things engaging. This class is for the athletes to enjoy, learn and grow in new ideas, make new friends and build confidence.

It’s becoming more and more apparent that we need to teach our young ones from an early age how to build a healthy lifestyle. With so many distractions and easy paths to take we want to offer a chance to get a jump start on fitness while challenging these athletes to continue to improve.

While your kids are learning and having fun, I am too! As a Gamma of five (yes, 5!), I need to be healthy and active in order to keep up with all of their events and activities. Coaching Troops and becoming a part of the Triumph family is the best way I know how to do that. So, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your children’s lives and please help spread the word about Triumph Troops and Teens so we can better serve our youth!

You can join us for Triumph Troops every Monday and Tuesday from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM! CLICK HERE to get your punchcard now.
